The Power of the Gospel to Save and Change

“For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.” – 1 Thessalonians 1:5

When Paul, Timothy, and Silvanus brought the gospel to the Thessalonians, it wasn’t just a well-crafted speech, it was a divine force. As Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 1:5, the gospel arrived “not…in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance.” This wasn’t mere talk; it was the power of God at work, saving souls and transforming lives.

To start, the gospel is God’s power unto salvation for all who believe. It’s the message of Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection for the forgiveness of sins, and its power shatters the darkness and grip of sin over us (1Co 15:1-4, Rom 6:17-23):

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” – Romans 1:16

“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” – 1 Corinthians 1:18

But the gospel doesn’t stop at salvation: it can change us. Through the Holy Ghost, it renews our minds, strengthens our resolve, and equips us to serve and love in ways the world cannot comprehend (2Ti 1:7-8, Eph 3:16-21). It brings about real conviction and transformation (Rom 12:1-2).

The Thessalonians didn’t just hear the gospel; they saw its power in action and saw lives changed. Paul and his companions lived it out: “as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake” (1Th 1:5). Their humility, sacrifice, and love gave credibility to the message (Acts 20:18-21). Their conduct was becoming of the gospel (Php 1:27), and the Spirit’s work through them brought “much assurance” to the believers (Rom 15:13, 1Co 2:1-5).

This same gospel power is at work today. It saves the lost and transforms the saved, empowering us to endure trials, love boldly, and walk in truth amid a world of confusion (Col 1:9-14). God’s infinite love, shown through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, changes us from within when we trust it and search out its depths. I pray you understand Christ’s love better, so you can grow and help others do the same, and ultimately experience the power of the gospel.

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8

“[14] For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead. [15] And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.” – 2 Corinthians 5:14-15

“[14] For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, [15] Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, [16] That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; [17] That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, [18] May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; [19] And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. [20] Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, [21] Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.” – Ephesians 3:14-21
